It’s that time of year again – time to start collecting seed from various prairie plants that have flowered and gone to seed. This is a great way to experience the beauty of prairie plants up close and learn about a diverse range of plant species and the wildlife that utilizes them for food and habitat. All of the seed collected will get processed and cleaned to then be seeded on future restored prairies, wetlands, oak savannas, and woodlands.
You do not need to be experienced in plant ID or have any prior knowledge of seed collection - we will have an overview of each species we'll be collecting. Children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult chaperone. Volunteer groups (students or other) need to contact Claire directly to register and talk over logistics.
We meet at 9:00 am and will head to the prairie on the West side of the park - please arrive on time for a brief overview of the species we'll be collecting. Or, if arriving late, find Mary or a DCP staff member out in the prairie to get an overview of what we'll be doing. Those attending are welcome to leave at any time - though we will be collecting from 9-12, this volunteer event is flexible and we welcome anyone who'd like to join us for however long you're able to do so!
What to bring: Bring drinking water, sunscreen, bug spray, gloves, a hat, and a snack, if desired. Wear closed toed shoes and breathable clothes you don’t mind working in – long sleeves and pants are recommended. We will provide all collecting materials.
