Many Dane County Parks have reduced light pollution and offer excellent night sky viewing opportunities for stars, planets, moon phases, meteor showers, or other astronomical events. They also offer some of the best views of the northern lights (aurora borealis) when they are visible to southern Wisconsin. Brigham County Park and Donald County Park have the darkest skies and best viewing spots in the Dane County Park System.
Normal park hours are 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. Park users that would like to visit after hours for night sky viewing can purchase a permit online and display the printed receipt face-up on the driver's side dashboard.
Clubs and groups are also welcome to host star gazing events in the park system and can obtain a special event permit to do so.
