2025 Theme is a Declaration to “Remember. Resist. Rejoice.”
DANE COUNTY, Wis. — On Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Dane County Board of Supervisors officially recognized June 2025 as Pride Month throughout Dane County, celebrating the diversity, impact, and resilience of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) community. The board passed 2025 RES-041 to mark this observance and affirm its ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion.
“Each year we celebrate Pride Month in recognize the impact, and resilience of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) community in Dane County,” said County Board Chair Patrick Miles. “The federal administration’s attacks on local communities for being inclusive give our recognition added meaning this year. We will stand against such hatred and discrimination and are committed to protecting and uplifting all members of the community.”
This year’s theme for Wisconsin’s Pride celebration, “Remember. Resist. Rejoice.,” honors the legacy of LGBTQI+ trailblazers, calls for continued resistance against discrimination, and celebrates the joy and strength of the LGBTQI+ community.
“As we celebrate pride this month, we must never forget the legacies of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, two trans activists who were at the heart of the Stonewall Uprising. That iconic moment launched Pride month,” said Supervisor Rick Rose (Dist. 16). “Fifty-six years later, the trans community is facing wild discrimination and hate, even here in Wisconsin. So, it's totally on us—gay and lesbian folks in Dane County—to show up for them. Just like lesbians had gay men's backs during AIDS, the real flex for the entire LGBTQ+ movement is to unite for trans rights now. When we stand together, validating everyone's lived experience under that same Pride flag, we're not just honoring our past struggles, we're building a future that slaps for everyone.”
The board also welcomed Sean O’Brien, Policy and Advocacy Director of Fair Wisconsin, to speak in support of the resolution. “We are grateful to County Executive Melissa Agard and the Dane County Board of Supervisors for putting forth the resolution recognizing June as Pride Month. As the LGBTQ+ community faces an unprecedented attack on our rights from the federal government and right here in our own state legislature, we need continued public shows of support from our elected officials,” said O’Brien. “Pride started as a riot led by trans women of color, and this year, Pride will continue as a protest where we celebrate the joy and beauty of our community and recommit ourselves to fighting for a world where everyone can live free of harassment and discrimination.”
The Dane County Board continues to follow in the footsteps of past LGBTQI+ identifying members, including Dick Wagner, Tammy Baldwin, and Mark Pocan, who each made lasting impacts on the lives of LGBTQI+ residents across Dane County. The board remains committed to ensuring that all LGBTQI+ individuals have equal access to housing, employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services and opportunities.
